Gmail Backup tool

Gmail Backup tool: "Sure, you do regular backups of your data, right? You know you'd be sunk if you lost all that stuff: financial information, customer database, reports, and more. But what about your email? Back in the day, you used a desktop email application. When you backed up your system, you were [...]"

DeepSurplus

DeepSurplus: "

Deep Surplus is a fantastic source for an encyclopedic array of cables.

For example, Apple sells a mini to mini cable for connecting your iPod to your stereo for $24.95. The same cable can be had for less than a dollar from Deep Surplus

For work I buy all of our networking patch cables, USB cables, etc. for 10% of the cost of buying them at Staples, Microcenter, or Best Buy. I recently bought some rather hard to find white, two-lead speaker wire, which elsewhere was as pricey as $80, for $12 for a 25-foot length. I also bought a 6-foot mini (iPod) to dual RCA (for my older audiophile amplifier) cable for $2.75, compared to $24.95 at the Apple store.

I rely on them whenever I need essential cables affordably.

The hell that is long haul international air travel illustrated in brilliant drawings

The hell that is long haul international air travel illustrated in brilliant drawings: "

Filed under:

Illustrator Christoph Niemann flew from New York to Berlin, and used his incredible talent to describe the kind of hell you go through when you fly long haul. In his brilliant drawings, you'll see everything from the armrest battle to that weird taste in your mouth when you wake up after your short nap.

Oh, and the little hole at the bottom of the airplane window allows for pressure differential and prevents your window from fogging up. Now you know!

Head on over to the New York Times for the entire illustrated journal of his trip.

Hudson River Approach

Hudson River Approach: "

A friend sent this to me recently. It made me laugh, so I thought I would share it with you. Interestingly, they actually train for this sort of thing at the airlines. During a sim session at recurrent training last year, my instructor failed both engines during initial climb after flying though a flock of birds at about 3000 feet. Pilots of small single engine aircraft are taught from day one that, in the even of an engine failure after takeoff, returning to the departure airport is virtually impossible. The best action in such an aircraft is to continue straight ahead and search for a field or road for an emergency landing. On my departure in the sim however, the instructor asked me to begin an immediate turn back toward the airport. Surprisingly, not only did I make it back to the airport, but I actually had to dirty up and struggled a bit to get down in time to land. Amazing really...how well a 140,000 lb. aircraft will glide with absolutely no thrust.
